Risk Assessment for Information for Mine Subsidence Potential

Our country has historically built around the prevailing industry that supplied jobs to our grandparents and their parents.  As these industries ended and new industries are created, the area becomes scared and people become impacted.  For example, the mining industry started in the late 1700's and is still prevalent today throughout the country.  As the coal reserves are depleted or become unfeasible to mine, the governmental requires the coal company to restore the land to a useable form.  Prior to 1976 before the passage of SMRCA, Coal Companies left the scares of their activities, such as the near vertical mine opening in the photo below.  Even venturing on these lands can be dangerous.  Some of these opening were capped and covered or backfilled inproperly and become opened over time.  Not knowing can become a costly and dangerous event.
Abandoned mine lands are prevalent throughout our country.  The Federal Governmental through OSMRE and State Agencies have been addressing these land issues for many years, but the magnitude of work is enormous.  Even addressing these issues does not mean that the land is suitable for certain types of development that have already taken place. One resulting impact of abandoned mine lands is mine subsidence.  Is your property in such an area? Wouldn't you like to be informed?

Mine subsidence can come in  different forms, but the most common is pothole subsidence.  This type is associated with soil collapsing into the abandoned underground mines producing a hole that is difficult to predict. The photo below was an actual subsidence event in an old residential community.  The hole was over 20 feet deep undercutting the sidewalk and street.
